Project Overview
Addressing the Issues
Heat and energy loss was prevalent in concentrated areas with heavy foot traffic across Laurier University’s campus. The frequent opening and closing of the building’s entrance/exit doors caused outdoor chilly air to infiltrate indoors during winter. As a result, this led to uncomfortable indoor temperatures for faculty and students who had to work or study in the chilly areas.
The NDS Energy-Saving Solution
Northern Dock Systems installed 11 air curtains, which created an invisible curtain of air moving across the door opening. Thus sealing off up to 90% of outside air infiltration in the process.
Air curtains allowed the building entrance and exit doors to remain open to accommodate heavy foot traffic while saving energy. This project resulted in $4,000 in energy rebates.
Air Curtains Sealing Out Cold Chilly Air
After conducting a thorough needs assessment at Laurier University, air curtains were installed in areas with specific environmental conditions where pedestrian traffic varied greatly depending on the time of day. During peak hours, doors would remain open for extended periods of time.
Custom Built Solutions – Custom Stands, Motion Sensors and Timers
The installation posed a number of challenges, with the majority of units being located in areas with glass floor-to-ceiling openings. Northern Dock Systems built and painted custom stands to ensure the structural stability of the installation without compromising on Laurier University’s modern, aesthetic appeal.
Falcon BEA motion sensors and timers were installed inside and outside of each opening where Durashield air curtains were placed to activate at full speed automatically when pedestrians were approximately five feet away from the door opening to minimize heat loss during winter. Activation timers were set to 20-30 seconds at the busiest locations to maintain an optimal seal and avoid unnecessarily on/off cycling.
