Project Overview

Rodents Entering through Gaps in the Weather Seal

Rodents were getting through the gaps and infiltrating this food manufacturing facility in Cobourg. The old brush and rubber weather was damaged and was leaving gaps up 3″, which rodents were getting through.

Rodent-Proof Weather Seal

Northern Dock Systems arrive on site and removed the old weather seal and installed new rodent-proof weather seal. This rodent-proof weather seal has four layers of protection:

  • Brush Seal: Mice and other rodents dislike the texture of the brush, it deters them from chewing on the brush.
  • Rubber Seal: Creates a tight seal around doors to prevent contamination infiltration and provide energy savings.
  • Stainless-Steel Screen: If the rodents chew through the rubber, the first thing they will meet is a stainless-steel mesh that spans the entire width of the rubber seal.
  • Xcluder Fill Fabric: The final line of defence is the stainless-steel wool blend on top of the stainless-steel mesh. It contains stainless steel fibres and is topped off with a protective backer. Once sealed shut not only is the width of the floor sealed but also the corners of the door.

Getting the Job Done Right

The technician installed the perimeter brush weather seal facing the door. However, after testing the rolling steel door, he discovered 2-3″ gaps roughly 18″ at the bottom of the guides. After inspecting the door, he determined that the weather seal was being pushed from the jamb by rust. So he chisel the rust clear and clamped the guide to the jamb to bolt it in place to eliminate the gap. Finally, after testing the door several more times, he was confident that all the gaps were sealed and that rodents would no longer be able to access the building through this door.
