Provide a weather tight seal, while still maintaining unrestricted access into the trailer.

Company: Mitchell Plastics
Province: Ontario

THEIR CHALLENGE

This project was driven by employee comfort. The existing dock seals had become worn over time and were not set-up to accommodate volume of use. Employees working in the loading area were extremely cold and uncomfortable to the point that company Health and Safety had become involved. Gaps around the perimeter of the opening let a large volume of cold air and moisture into the building – especially during the winter months.

THE SOLUTION

Northern Dock Systems installed six (6) Nordock Foam Frame Shelters and Rain-Shield Headers at shipping/receiving positions. This combination provides a maximum weather tight seal, while still maintaining unrestricted access into the trailer. Terminator Gaps seals were also included to seal the troublesome trailer hinge gap.

Taking it a step further – we made an adjustment to the location of their existing Steel Faced Bumpers. At each dock position, the Steel Faced Bumpers were removed, adjusted and welded immediately adjacent to the dock leveler – a foam filler pad was added to accommodate this shift. This small adjustment has made a big impact by preventing additional cold air from entering the building.

THE RESULT

This seal project has been a tremendous success. As you can see from the attached video, this Foam Frame Shelter Set-up creates a beautiful seal with the trailer. Employees working in the area no longer have to “bundle up” during their shift and have been extremely positive about the improvement.

This particular project is also eligible for energy rebates through local Kitchener Utilities.
