Upgrading to Steel Face Dock Bumpers
Project Overview
Upgrading Worn Laminate Dock Bumpers to Steel Face
Reimer Hardwoods reached out to Northern Dock Systems for a Preventive Maintenance visit. While checking the site, we noticed that the laminate dock bumpers were worn out and no longer sticking out far enough to protect the loading dock from damage when trucks back up.
Reimer Hardwoods had worked with Northern Dock Systems before for a Hydraulic Dock Conversion and was very happy with the service. Since they trusted our advice, they were happy to upgrade to new Steel Face Dock Bumpers. This upgrade would give better protection against trailer impacts and help reduce damage to the dock equipment.
The Benefits of Steel Face Dock Bumpers
- Protection: Steel face dock bumpers act as the first line of defence, absorbing impacts from trailers and preventing damage to the building, dock seals, and levelers.
- Durability: These dock bumpers have a steel face that protects them from being worn down from frequent impacts, which happens to laminate dock bumpers. Extending the life expectancy of the dock bumper.
- Efficiency: The low friction surface of the floating faceplate allows trailers to move with minimal resistance, which prolongs the life of both the bumper and the trailer.
- Flexibility: The bumpers’ adaptability to various applications and mounting configurations makes them suitable for a range of different loading dock setups.
Installing Steel Face Dock Bumpers
- Preparation: The technician set up the work area in the dock bay, focusing on the left side, closest to the building, to minimize disruption to other areas of the loading dock.
- Removal of the Old Bumpers: The existing bumpers, which had suffered wear and tear, were carefully removed. The anchor studs were cut off using a grinder to ensure smooth removal.
- New Bumper Placement: After assessing the optimal placement, the technician marked out new locations for the concrete anchors that would secure the new bumpers.
- Anchor Installation: To ensure a secure fit, the technician drilled new holes into the concrete and installed 12 heavy-duty 5/8” x 5” long concrete wedge anchors to hold the steel face bumpers firmly in place.
- Final Touches: Once the bumpers were installed, the technician applied a fresh coat of black spray paint to the bumpers, enhancing their appearance and ensuring long-term protection against weather and wear.
A Safer and Protected Loading Dock
The installation of steel face dock bumpers enhances the safety, efficiency, and longevity of the loading dock area. By preventing damage to other essential dock equipment, the new bumpers reduce repair costs and improve operational efficiency, ensuring that the dock is well-prepared to handle the challenges of frequent trailer impacts.
